This summer we're housing some families with dads, as well as moms and kids. We do our best to accommodate the needs at the moment, and these families needed housing as they had timed out at the other local shelters.
Because most are Mexican, a few of the moms were able to get jobs at the nearest grocery store and nearby hotels. It’s easier for the women to find work than the men. For these families, working is possible because there is always a parent at home with their children.
They are all using the CBP One app daily trying to secure an appointment to request asylum.
We’ve been fortunate to have the Border Community Alliance Borderlands Ambassador Interns visiting our guests this summer. We have a strong team of volunteers during the winter and spring months, but snowbirds fly north in the summer, so it’s been terrific that our guests have had such wonderful company this summer.
Since June 18, a few interns have been spending time twice a week at our apartments, teaching English, playing games, doing crafts, and the big hit - taking them to the nearest basketball court for some outside fun and exercise.
Many thanks to the interns and their fearless leader, Amy Tice, BCA Borderlands Ambassadors Program Supervisor, for sharing their time with our guests. It's made a huge difference in their summer.
